In the Mood for Love

If you come to Shanghai, one thing to do is get a custom-made qibao (also known as cheongsam) dress.  These demure yet sexy traditional chinese dresses represent the high of shanghai fashion during the French Colonial days (my favourite era) when it was all about glamour!

Maggie Cheung wore it best for her performance of "In the Mood for Love" and that's exactly the mood I was in when slipping into this ivory silk qibao.  The dress itself instantly changed my posture and my overall behaviour.  I have to say, it requires a fair amount of grace and lightness when walking...not a easy task in our world of denim and t-shirts!

  6. Hi Janet,

Would you happen to know a good place for custom suits in Shanghai?

  7. Hi Li,

Good custom qibao costs money since the quality of silk and hand stitched embroidery takes a lot of time. But if you don't mind sacrificing quality, you can easily pick one from the rack that is printed synthetic and have it tailored. Having it tailored will make it look a lot better. Good luck!
